During the autumn months trees are in a state of transformation and restructuring. As it moves towards dormancy or a latent period, the tree is preparing itself for winter. It can perceive the changing temperatures and photoperiod and abides by the internal networks that induce the cessation of growth. A natural process of leaf shedding, termed “senescence,” generally indicates that a tree is getting ready for winter. While trees may appear to be idle during this time, they are actually laboring to manage their metabolic system and decelerate some physiological behaviors, like photosynthesis and transpiration. Plug plants are an excellent way to acquire plants without the risks, time, space and effort needed with seeds. They are a fantastic way to buy annuals, perennials or bedding plants to fill your garden with colour or get some part grown veg plants.

- Crocosmia Lucifer shown above is a robust perennial with pleated or ribbed green leaves.
- Tall linear leaves upto 3 feet tall are produced from corms.
- The arching stems carry bold deep red flowers in summer.

Garden Designer’s Round Table: A Round-up of Bridges & Water Crossings
Just down the road from where I live is the one of the most notable bridges in history. The Concord bridge is the sight of ‘the shot heard round the world’; renowned in American history as the the beginning of the Revolutionary War.
This morning, when I realized I had all but forgotten about today’s water post, a friend quickly (and thankfully) gave me much needed inspiration when she said that the first thing she thought of when I said water was bridges. (and we have so many famous bridges in our midst!)
Bridges, of course! They go hand in hand with water….(unless, like me, you are just as likely to charge straight through a babbling brook, soaking a perfectly good pair of shoes).
