In what seems like a very long time ago now, I made a simple decision that I would focus my work on helping people learn how to make their garden and home a healthier place.
A simple goal. A frustrating goal. But a focused one and Im pleased to say over the years I have indeed made a difference to more than a few folks. Having said that, it is not without its frustrations:
** some people refuse to believe the accumulating science on the negative impacts of chemical use in home and gardens
** some people prefer failure and yes, we all know people who live to complain and fail rather than charting a new, unknown course
** some people stubbornly cling to the notion that it wont happen to me
But self-doubt creeps in now and then because there are so many other problems in the world and our countries that are bigger and more important. And I despair. Long ago, I learned I couldnt fix them all, I couldnt take on and slay every dragon that wandered onto the stage, I simply didnt have the energy to fight them all. So I chose my battle. I chose to make a difference with as many people as I could in the best way I knew how.
In todays world when the battles are lining up in phalanxes rather than single-file if is even more frustrating and often overwhelming to contemplate the apparent futility in what I do.
For example its fox in charge of henhouse time at the USDA when former agri-biz executives are in charge where theyve just approved the use of GMO alfalfa for production. The only issue here is that alfalfa is both a wind-carried pollen and an easy genetic crosser. These two characteristics ensure the GMO genetics will move into the straight strains contaminating them. The impact of this is that GMO-contaminated alfalfa will effectively remove all production of organic meat, organic milk (animals eat the GMO crop) and a range of other products containing alfalfa meal. In a relatively short time, there will be a huge range of alfalfa-based products that will join the canola-based world (all canola sold in stores is now GMO) and the status of organic will be lost. Period.
I look at examples such as this, pollution, global warming, and untrammeled greed at political and biz-executive levels and I weep for our future.
But I know I make a small difference to a great many people. A small difference to be sure but a difference.
So here are the questions for you. Do you even make a small difference? Whats the focus for your life coasting along or making a difference in some way?
Are you part of the solution or part of the problem? What difference did you make today?
