What is an accent plant?

Posted by Billy Hayes under Gardening Articles

An accent plant may have slightly different meanings to different people. An accent plant could be a focal point plant or a plant to catch attention. These plants could also be called an anchor plant. Generally speaking an accent plant exhibits a striking feature such as size, shape, or color. Accent plants usually are the highly ornamental plants that sit in front of or slightly to the side of a front window or main entrance of the home. To be used correctly in the landscape, they should be in balance with the scale, color and texture of the house. They usually stand alone or tower above a smaller garden and are given ample room to reveal their attractive form and ornamental features.Accent Plants are used to add a change of color or texture and highlight your main landscape displays. Textured plants with fuzzy or unique foliage usually are striking enough to be a focal point. Plants with silver or gold foliage such as variegated English Ivy or silver-leafed Helichrysum would also serve the purpose of an accent plant. One of the most unique yard plants that is being used as an accent plant is the Lavender Twist Redbud tree. It is a focal point in the spring when it blooms, in the summer because of the weeping effect it displays and in the winter with the unique contorted branches.
